Personal Branding: Online and In Person

Posted

If you’re just starting out on your career path or reentering the job market after a few years’ absence, you’ve no doubt heard the phrase “personal branding” in relation to your job search. With everything else a job search entails, it can be tempting to hope branding goes the way of the dinosaur. The bad news is personal branding is here to stay; the good news is, it’s easier than you might think to create your personal brand.

Personal Branding Online

Creating your personal brand begins online, where potential employers will – for better or worse – seek you out to see just what your online presence reveals about you. It can be very difficult to continually keep your professional image in mind when commenting on posts, sharing pictures from your vacation or just sharing your opinions, but remembering that the whole world can potentially see everything you do online is extremely important.

Cultivate your online presence and create your brand by making the things you want employers to see about you stand out immediately. First, always email potential employers from an email account that uses your name, rather than a cute or funny handle. Second, create a LinkedIn profile, Twitter account and/or blog intended for your professional contacts. Use these accounts and profiles to share information about your own accomplishments, plus newsworthy items about your industry. Volunteer these profiles and blogs on job applications and in your correspondence to employers.

Personal Branding In Person

You can cultivate a smart, savvy online brand, but if the real thing doesn’t match the brand, you’ll have a hard time reconciling the two to employers when you get the interview. Dress professionally and groom yourself well for job interviews. Seek out the most common job interview questions and have your answers ready to emphasize your experience and accomplishments. Know as much about your potential employer as you can beforehand, and ask questions that prove you’re interested and incisive. And most of all, make sure employers know what you can do for them that no one else can.
