What Healthcare Professionals Need to Know

Posted

As a healthcare professional, you may be embarrassed to admit that you’re still a little confused about the Affordable Care Act. Don’t be — keeping track of what the Affordable Care Act (ACA) offers you, why it’s important and what it means for you as a temporary employee can be confusing. Here’s the lowdown:

What the ACA Does For You:

Most full-time healthcare workers in the U.S. obtain health insurance coverage through their employer. Temporary, temp-to-hire and permanent placement healthcare professionals, however, are often responsible for obtaining and paying for their own health insurance policy. The Affordable Care Act’s Health Insurance Marketplace is designed to help you compare and purchase private health insurance coverage, or, if you qualify, sign up for coverage under Medicaid.

Why Getting Covered Is Important:

Signing up for health insurance coverage, either through healthcare.gov marketplace or by purchasing coverage from an independent health insurance agent makes sense fiscally and physically.  Aside from the health benefits of having insurance coverage, it’s a good idea when it comes tax time, as well —  those who do not have coverage will pay an income tax fee of either 1 percent of your income or $95 per adult/$47.50 per child, whichever is higher, beginning in 2015.

When Not to Worry About Coverage Under ACA:

Everyone needs health care coverage, but there’s no need to drop prior or standing policies in order to meet the Affordable Care Act’s requirements. If you have coverage under Medicare, Medicaid, through a spouse’s employer, a COBRA package, retiree coverage, VA coverage or TRICARE, you’re considered covered so far as the ACA is concerned. And if you’ve already purchased health insurance from an agent or other provider, you’re good to go.
