Nonverbal Communication: Impress an Interviewer With Your Actions

You hear so much advice about what to say and what not to say during job interviews that it’s sometimes easy to forget that actions speak louder than words — what you do during an interview is just as important. Check your nonverbal communication skills before your next interview to be sure you’re putting the best foot forward… literally!

Start Off With a Smile

That old adage that you never get a second chance to make a first impression is never more important than when you arrive for an interview. Look pleased to be there by keeping your expression open and friendly, and don’t forget to smile. Doing so will disarm even the most stuffy interviewers.

Remember What Your Mother Said

All that nagging your mother did about your posture was to prepare you for job interviews, where remembering not to slump, slouch, sprawl or lean back in your chair is of the utmost importance. Part of looking professional is looking approachable and yet confident, and that’s easily achieved by standing and sitting up straight — any leaning you do should be toward interviewers.

Speaking of Leaning…

“Leaning in” has become a byword for confidence and openness in business, but take care just how far you carry this advice. Don’t ever crowd interviewers or invade their personal space, which comes off as both socially awkward and very uncomfortable. On the same note, follow your interviewers’ leads when it comes to handshakes, pats on the back, and other touchy-feely social niceties — if they initiate the contact, very good, but if not, leave it.

Keep the Lines of (Nonverbal) Communication Open

Body language experts will tell you that the signals you send with your body are often read without others even realizing it — and each time you cross your arms across your chest, fidget, or otherwise distract interviewers, you’re inadvertently giving them signs that you are not altogether invested in them or the interview. Never cross your arms across your chest or angle your body away from interviewers, both classic signs of defensiveness, and try not to fidget more than you absolutely have to, no matter how long the interview lasts!
