Is Your Job Search Strategy Efficient?

Posted

Don’t Make These Common Mistakes.

You’re checking the online job boards. You’re using social media. You’re sending out resumes. But you’re still hitting the wall in your job search – what gives? Even if you seem to be doing everything right in your job search, your strategy may be at fault if you’re making these common mistakes that can torpedo even a great candidate’s chances.

You’re Doing the Robot During Your Search

Hopefully you’re not doing the robot dance during your job search, but if you’re blindly applying to any and all jobs in your area or field, without reading the fine print or researching the company first, then you’re going about your job search like a robot. Be careful only to apply for jobs you know you’re ready for – you’re wasting your time and the time of hiring managers and HR managers if you don’t have the qualifications or experience the job description requires, even if you think you’d be a great fit for the job.

Your Resume was Last Updated Three Years Ago

If you’re sending out the same old tired resume you’ve been using for years, it’s no wonder you’re not getting interviews. Update your resume every six months at least. Don’t have anything to add, you say? That’s part of the problem. Seek out volunteer activities and additional training in your field to add to your resume. It proves to employers that you’re willing to go the extra mile to gain experience.

You’re Not Networking

It can seem intimidating to tell friends and former colleagues that you need help in your job search, but if you’re not putting yourself out there as part of your strategy, you’re making a huge mistake. Former colleagues may know about unposted jobs in your field you’d never know about otherwise, and may keep you in mind for future openings if they know you’re searching for a job, so don’t go it alone – make the people you know in your field aware that you’re ready for a new opportunity.

You’re Forgetting About Temporary Jobs

When you’ve never worked with a temp agency, it may not occur to you to make temp or temp-to-hire jobs part of your job search. A huge mistake, when temp jobs are a great way to gain valuable experience and meet people in your job field.
