Why Are Your Star Employees Leaving?

Posted

When it comes to turnover at your organization, it’s tempting to blame the departing employees for abandoning ship – they’re not up to the job, they not serious about their careers, they’re just plain lazy. But maybe that isn’t the case.

They Don’t Feel Respected

Ask your employees for one workplace wish, and likely they’ll all come back with some variation on the same theme: respectful management. Showing your employees you respect their talents and their dedication means rewarding them for a job well done. The rewards do not have to be of the cash kind, either. Flexible scheduling, an open-door policy for concerns and questions, and just a few minutes spent with employees one-on-one or even in groups expressing your appreciation is often all it takes to retain top talent.

They Don’t Feel Satisfaction

Job dissatisfaction has roots that can spread to nearly all aspects of the organization and the employee’s personality, but it often begins when employees do not feel their work is important. You as a manager or employer may be inadvertently contributing to belittling your employees by micromanaging, making sweeping changes to policy or procedure without input from your employees, or just by overworking and underpaying staff. Your mediocre employees may have no other choice but to stay, but your star employees will find satisfaction elsewhere. Stop the high employee turnover problem by asking your employees how you can improve their work lives — then listen, and plan to make some changes.

They Get Off On the Wrong Foot

Sometimes it’s nothing that you do as a manager or employer that makes the best employees stray — it’s what you don’t do. You set employees up for failure if you fail to onboard them well, providing them with clear job descriptions (that actually match the job tasks) and honest information about the company culture and their chances for advancement. When your job descriptions and your PR materials fail to match the actual job, employees feel like victims of the old bait and switch, and the great ones move on.
